The Apostle Peter taught some of the first Christians that to follow Jesus wholeheartedly was to trade full citizenship with the world for a life of exile. Christians live in the world, and love the world as Jesus did. But they have too much loyalty to the kingdom of Christ to call the world their true home.
But in a world where identity is wrapped up in wealth, status, looks, acceptance, achievement and power, what does an exile have to go by?
1 Peter answers every Christian's question - "Who am I?" - with words like 'beloved,' 'holy,' 'chosen,' 'blessed' along with some tougher words like 'exile,' 'sojourner,' and 'suffering servant.' It's all in the mix, and, put together, they give us a clear picture of who we are...and whose we are...so we can live this life with assurance and hope.
